What is Dopamine Decor? Well, we know dopamine is the “feel-good” response to an external source. “Dopamine” paired with “décor” would be our feel-good response to our home environment, hence “Dopamine decor.”
Dopamine decor for self care is probably one of the most overlooked methods of self care. It has improved my overall mood and in this post I will give you the blueprint to enhance your self care through dopamine decor.
For a while, I’ve wanted to write about how I got rid of all my furniture on Facebook Marketplace for a fresh start in my healing journey. While scrolling Instagram, I found a very random post discussing DOPAMINE DECOR! In this post, she describes how she, too, got rid of all her furniture to purchase pieces she loves. So there were others, YAY! Who even knew there was a name for it?
Why I Made The Change?
I was extremely fed up with the outdated rustic farmhouse décor and craved something modern, charming, and lavish, just like myself. The plan was to replace all my dull and washed-out gray furniture pieces; eventually, I opted for a chic and elegant with boho touches and LOTS OF PLANTS.
I knew that I needed a transformation when I noticed that my home décor didn’t reflect my personality. In the past, I bought furniture pieces based on what others would find comfortable and what would make me look more mature. However, this time around, I only chose items that made me feel good. I didn’t seek any recommendations or opinions from others because I wanted everything to be influenced solely by my preferences.
You will know when your décor does not fit your personal style if you’re struggling to feel comfortable at home, constantly rearranging furniture or buying new things to make your space “complete.” Since updating my décor to match my personal taste, I rarely feel the need to buy new items. I now feel content and satisfied knowing that my vision is reflected in my home.
If you want to experience Dopamine Decor for yourself, let me show you the way.

Find Your Dopamine Decor Style
Are you someone who likes to keep things minimalistic or do you prefer a more maximalist approach? Are you drawn to monochrome or do you like to add pops of color? Ask yourself these questions to get a clear understanding of not only your style but what FEELS good to you. Now is not the time to look at prices, you are simply find your sauce
Take a moment to reflect on what colors and fabric combinations make you feel good. You can easily find examples of these on Pinterest and create aboard to keep all of your visuals together. Another option is to create a mood board on Canva. Just keep in mind that when searching for dopamine decor on Pinterest, it may seem overwhelming with bright and bold patterns like a Lisa Frank notebook. Don’t feel forced to follow that trend unless its your thing. Find the aesthetic that works best for you.
What Dopamine Decor Is Not
Don’t think of dopamine decor as ways to fill your home with stuff or that you have to get rid of everything like I did. It can be as simple as changing a wall color. Its ultimately up to you.
Evaluate Your Needs And Wants
As you embark on your self care dopamine decor journey, be mindful of your budget and lifestyle. This is the most challenging part of this step. You may really like an $800 accent chair, but have you considered how it would fit into your life? Flexibility is essential, as adjustments may need to be made along the way to accommodate the practical parts of daily life.
Can you afford it?
Would this be a smart purchase?
Is this functional for your lifestyle?
Can you recreate this by DIY?
Be Flexible
I had to make some adjustments to my original design, especially when it came to choosing a rug. While I would have loved a soft, white rug, I knew that it wouldn’t be practical with kids and an olde english bulldog. Instead, I chose a cowhide rug that’s easier to clean and better suited to my lifestyle. It’s important to stay open-minded and not fixate on a specific item. Ultimately, the goal is to find what brings you joy. Believe me, the search is worth it. Flexibility is essential, as adjustments may need to be made along the way to accommodate practicality and the realities of daily life

I purchased most of my items from Facebook Marketplace; because of this I had to act quickly to get the things I wanted. Once I purchased the perfect item, I then sold my old furniture to make room for the new pieces. I wouldn’t suggest this method as it can be impulsive, but I continued until I was able to replace everything.
